How Can I Avoid Food Poisoning in China?

Travelling to China can be a challenge. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned traveler, there are many things to consider when it comes to eating. First, avoid eating uncooked food. Even if it is cheap, some dishes contain a lot of oil and should be avoided, unless you have a very low tolerance for fat. Moreover, it is not a good idea to take your children out to eat uncooked food.

Also, stay away from dairy products. In China, you should drink pure fresh milk rather than processed, Ultra High Temperature (UHT) products. These products kill bacteria and remove most of the nutritional value. Most Chinese dairy factories also add thickening agents, preservatives, and artificial flavors to their products. As a result, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to avoid food poisoning when eating these products.

Most cases of food poisoning can be avoided by following some basic guidelines. Foods that have been prepared and handled properly should not have a bad odor or taste. It is also vital to refrigerate food quickly. Never leave food out at room temperature for more than two hours, or more than one hour at a temperature above 90 F. Uncooked food should also be eaten immediately – bacteria multiply at temperatures from 40 to 140 F, which is a common temperature for bacteria to grow.
